In about 1965, Arnold Senterfitt mapped his first airport in Mexico. This was done on a trip with three other aircraft who were in search of airports for a yet to be named group of people who were to become the Flying Samaritans. Upon finding and landing on several dirt strips, Arnold measured and made rough diagrams for his future use. After several more trips and many more diagrams, all on single sheets of paper, Arnold gathered up all the diagrams and put them in a note book. Upon seeing this "airport book", several of Arnold´s friends wanted a copy and this was the start of Senterfitt´s Airports of Baja and Mainland Mexico. This book is now in its 20th edition and has over 300 airports, all with photos and airport diagrams.
Over the ensuing years, as more and more people wanted his "airport" book and were asking to go down with him, Arnold established the Baja Bush Pilots thusly becoming the Pied Piper of Mexico. (Arnold jokingly talks abut the time he took about 15 small aircraft down to Panama. He indicated that he had aircraft strung all the way from San Diego to Panama, some on roads, some at airports, and one on a golf course
In 1996, at an age that exceeded 70, Arnold decided it was time to turn over the group to someone a little younger. Jack and Karen McCormick purchased the BBP in January of 1996 and now, with Arnold’s ever-present advice, directs the activities of the BBP, markets the Senterfitt "Airport" Book, and leads groups of people on trips south of the border.
It is fairly safe to say that Arnold´s devotion to flying and mapping airports, not only in Mexico but in Central and South America, has made flying south of the border what it is today. Almost every aircraft flying south of the border, both private and commercial, has the "Senterfitt Book" on board.
Jack McCormick´s love affair with Mexico started in about 1970 when Karaen (his wife) and another couple flew down to Mexico in an old Cessna 185. "We were four adults acting like kids wandering around in a foreign country with no clue other than Senterfitt´s Book" according to McCormick. This "first" adventure included entering Mexico at Nogalas, circling to gain altitude and then heading straight for Isla Trburon (the chicken route) in route to Francisquito. Some of McCormick´s fondest memories of this trip were visiting with Papa Diaz in Bahia de los Angeles, the pig roast at the Serenidad, and the honeymoon suite at the Playa Cortes in Guaymas.
Sparked by this trip, McCormick took flying lessons, purchased a Mooney 231, joined the BBP, and headed south of the border. McCormick recalls that even though he holds membership number 30 in the BBP, he only went on one trip with Arnold. Almost all of his flying was with no plans and no destination other then aiming the airplane "South of the Border"
Jack and Karaen purchased the BBP in January of 1996. They have three adult children, seven grand children and live in Chandler Arizona where McCormick is CEO of a software publishing company. McCormick flies an Aero Commander 500S (Shrike) and has about 1,600 hours of which over 1,200 hours are in Mexico.
